Some couples like to keep it cute and casual, while others really want to go all out. Whether you’re searching for a present that’s sweet and straightforward or out-of-this-world outrageous, here’s some inspiration that’ll make your first wedding anniversary an event to remember.

Schedule a Photoshoot

Having your photos taken on your wedding day can be a lot of pressure – not every couple gets the images they hoped for, or simply want a re-run, with more time and fewer eyes on them.

Do some research to find a photographer that really suits you as a couple. Do you want the setting to be in your new shared home? Or do you want a natural environment like on the beach or in your favourite location? Do you want to include your family in the photos, or do you want it to be just the two of you?

A photo shoot is also an excellent opportunity to start a heartfelt wedding anniversary tradition. Put a reminder in your calendar every year to schedule a photo shoot in the month of your anniversary. Years later, you can put all your photos together to track time and see the changes in your appearance as you grow old together. Everyone in the family will be looking forward to your annual photo album!

Make a Travel Dream Board

Have you ever heard of misattribution of arousal? It is a psychological term describing that people are more likely to fall in love with someone if experiencing something adventurous or even dangerous. Live life to fullest! If you can add colour to your life by being spontaneous, bold, carefree and adventurous, your marriage has the potential to stand the test of time. Starting from your first anniversary, are you ready for adventure?

To get the travel bug going, create a travel dream board with your spouse. Write down all the places you want to go, researching exciting things to do at each destination near or far. Cut out pictures from travel magazines, and hang it up in your bedroom or on your fridge. It’ll be a daily reminder of your travel aspirations and something to work towards!

Matching Tattoos

Matching tattoos are a way of expressing your commitment to each other, and to yourself – that you will stay faithful to your spouse. No matter what obstacles you face, there’s no getting rid of this wedding anniversary gift as a symbol of your love!

As for the tattoo design, that’s entirely up to the two of you. It could be as simple as each other’s names, or the date that you got married or the place where he proposed. Anything! Be unique and be adventurous. Although a tattoo is just a simple picture, it’s definitely a bit more outrageous than your conventional wedding anniversary gift.

Go on a Treasure Hunt

While you are officially married adults, you have the right to be as childish as you want! This could be a clever twist on the traditional first wedding anniversary gift of “Paper”.

For a really unique wedding anniversary idea, challenge your spouse with an adventurous treasure hunt. Get up early, start to write secret notes for each other and have them find the next hint. Though you are going through life as a team, it doesn’t mean that you should let your competitiveness go away! A little feisty competition is healthy, so feel free to really challenge each other. Don’t make the hunt too easy!

As a reward for reaching the finish line, treat your loved one to a special anniversary gift or experience. You could indulge them with a fine dining experience at a top-notch restaurant, saving yourselves from humdrum cooking life. Or for something a little different, treat them to a fun day out with a private museum tour or a cooking class. They’ve hunted for this gift, so they deserve it!

About Today photography

There is nothing more sentimental than rewatching the best day of your life with the one who made it happen. A year after the big day, curl up with your spouse on the sofa with some popcorn and relive those special moments. Have fun noticing things that you may not have had time to on the day – secretly smiling as they held your hand, their hands shaking with nerves as they walked down the aisle.

This is another heartfelt tradition you two can do every year. If you have kids or plan to in the future, have the little ones join in on the fun. They’ll love seeing how dressed up and in love you were ‘back in the day!’

Your first wedding anniversary is not something to be taken lightly. In fact, making it through your first year of marriage is a huge accomplishment! Those first twelve months include adjustments, discovery and a rollercoaster of emotions, as an individual and as a couple. For just a day, forget about work, forget about your responsibilities and celebrate your love. One year down, forever to go!
