What comes to mind when you hear the word tradition? Boring? Uncreative? Obligatory? It doesn’t have to be any of that. When planning a wedding, […]
Say hello to Chow-Ying, of British-Chinese heritage, and her British-Irish sweetheart, Michael. This gorgeous duo met when they were working in the same nightclub. They started off as friends, but two years later, that friendship bloomed into a beautiful romance!
Today we’re heading for the idyllic island of Lefkada in Greece for their laid-back beach wedding. I know – isn’t it just the most incredible location?
Chow and Michael wanted guaranteed sunshine for their big day, and that was just what they got. The most beautiful weather, a sparkling turquoise sea as a backdrop, and a day filled with laughter and love! From the boat ride after the beach ceremony to the fireworks, to Chow’s dad pulling some serious moves on the dancefloor, it was memorable from beginning to end.
This oh-so-happy day was captured beautifully by Lefteris of Kalampokas Fotografia.
We went to Venice for our ten year anniversary and he proposed on a gondola ride.
We decided to get married in Greece because we wanted to have a beach wedding and having it abroad meant we would be assured of good weather. Plus we felt that you get more for your money with a destination wedding.
We are quite a laid-back couple so we wanted something simple, bright and colourful that complemented the surroundings and amazing scenery of Lefkada. The day was perfect and we have memories that will last us a lifetime.
Our photographer was Lefteris Kalampokas of Kalampokas Fotografia. Lefteris was wonderful, he was very patient and stayed the whole day, which was much appreciated.
Our planner was Claire Salisbury at Lefkas Weddings. She was brilliant. Claire made planning a wedding abroad simple and straightforward. She was so organised, friendly and made our special day one to remember, and was also brilliant in coming up with ideas. Claire also speaks Greek, which helped with organising the event.
We also want to mention the patisserie that made the wedding cake and other desserts, which were amazing! It all tasted delicious.
I had an idea of what sort of dress I was going to wear, so researched on the internet a lot and found there was a shop near to where I live that stocked that type of dress. I wanted something that was light and floaty to suit the beach, so tried a few variations until I found my perfect dress.
Mike choose to wear a turquoise bow tie to go with the colour theme, and a shirt, grey trousers and boat shoes, for a smart-casual look that suited the beach location.
We were excited to be first couple to get married on Porto Katsiki as, although it is a famous beach in Greece it is on a remote part of the island away from the main resorts. It was amazing! The set-up was beautiful and the colour scheme complemented the natural beauty of the beach.
My heart melted when I saw my Dad standing at the beginning of the aisle ready to walk me down! It was wonderful exchanging the vows we wrote ourselves in front of our family and friends. It was such a magical day in a beautiful location.
After the ceremony, we took a boat trip back from the beach around the south coast of the island. It was brilliant as the view was to-die-for and the cocktails were awesome!
I wanted blue and white flowers to go with the turquoise colour scheme, and a beach theme to go with the location of the venue.
It is so difficult to pinpoint a favourite moment of the reception, as it was all amazing! From the first moment arriving by boat and seeing the beautiful decorations, to the cutting of the cake, speeches and delicious food. The Greek dancers were brilliant in getting everyone up and dancing after dinner and the fireworks ended the evening on a real high.
The funniest moment has got to be my Dad doing the moonwalk and the ‘Chinese vampire hop’. I have never seen him dance before and it was so unexpected! Other funny moments were when I squashed cake into Mike’s face after cutting the cake, and seeing everyone wearing moustaches!
We had our ‘first dance’ at the end of the night. It was magical. Lanterns had been lit along the jetty and beach and it looked beautiful. Everyone gathered around us with sparklers while we danced and then the fireworks went off behind us. It was amazing!
Challenges and Triumphs
Trying to keep to our budget was a huge challenge. Although we went over our initial budget, it was definitely worth it! Everything went smoothly so the whole day was a triumph.
