This contemporary shoot put together by luxury cake baker Toyin, of Tees Bakery and captured by Tino Antoniou, was inspired by this article featured in ‘The Pool’ . Written by frustrated bride-to-be and journalist Tobi Oredein (Stay tuned to see her exclusive interview on Nu Bride next week!) The article echoes mine and many others experience, which of course, is the very reason I started Nu Bride. The article states how excluded Tobi felt as a bride to be in the UK wedding industry, it boldly highlights the disparity of the visual representation couples of colour and questions why the mainstream wedding industry has such a one dimensional narrative of what marriage looks like in 2017.
As a result of reading this article (which went viral back in May) Nu Bride’s sponsor Toyin of Tees Bakery and Dean of VNVlive felt compelled to do something to bridge the gap and decided to create a styled shoot to represent the modern day luxury Afro Caribbean wedding and hopefully give inspiration not just to Afro-Caribbean couples but to couples of other nationalities and races too.
The Waldorf Hilton Hotel was a great choice for this inspiration shoot. Nestled in the bustling Covent Garden, London is a stunning backdrop for modern couples – it was even the home for Sophia and Ayo’s wedding a couple of years ago and the beautiful Palm Court’s modern and light interior, naturally lends itself to couples who enjoy contemporary styling and luxury.
The team have played to the venues strengths in this luxe shoot created with simple but extremely effective gold finishing touches. Oh and watch out for the flamingoes and the gold mirrored aisle. Epic
Inspiration behind the shoot
With a white palette, the décor created a look of purity, flair and elegance. We wanted to incorporate nature to a contemporary wedding using the Palm Court’s natural surroundings, including its lush palm trees as well as its contemporary décor,.
VNV Live took even the smallest of details into account and left us with a breathtaking end result, featuring a 7-meter runway (aisle) that stretched from the entrance, to the middle of the room and included a mini dance floor. The team dolled up the dance floor and each section of the runway had brand new gold-mirrored coating that complemented the light reflection and changed the look of the entire venue.
In order to contrast the white décor, Mary of Designer Chair Covers To Go used pastel pink table napkins and placed a beautiful tall and elaborate floral centre piece that had a hint of blush roses and cascading ivy’s. The tables were decorated with gold mirrored cutlery, gold plates, and gold candle holders to complement the runway.
Special attention was given to the wedding cake beautifully designed and crafted by Toyin of Tees Bakery. The cake was the perfect amalgamation of nature and architecture. Standing tall right in the middle of the gorgeous mirrored dance floor, at a height of 45 inches. The cake was made in white, with a bas relief finish, in keeping with the “Nature” aspect of the theme, using fresh flowers, tropical monstera leaves, as well as two flamingoes that symbolised the budding love of the bride and the groom. To add the feeling of height and a contemporary feel, we placed the cake on a clear perspex cake table surrounded with candles that gave the illusion of being up in the air from afar which added a little more magic to the décor.
Our bride and model for the day Aisha looked absolutely stunning. Her gorgeous afro textured hair was styled by Faith, our talented Afro hair stylist. It was blow-dried and then pulled back into a sleek bun and decorated with fresh flowers that accentuated the colour of her eyes.
Imelda of Beauty Boudoir kept the makeup subtle with gold smokey eyes and nude peachy lips which overall created a fresh, clean and glowing look.
Aisha wore a beautiful white gown that was provided by the Jacqui James’s Garden City collection. The gown had intricate honeycomb detailing on one shoulder which was the focal point and a veil that complemented the free-flowing theme of nature. In order to keep the look simple and elegant, we styled Aisha with a pair of sparkly earrings by Elsie Joy Bridal.
Our stylish groom and model for the day, was Maryvn. The groom’s outfit boasts of a classy and contemporary silhouette, wearing a slim cut three-piece suit designed by Younic’s Sartorial stylist, Ayo. In keeping with the theme of nature, the groom had a subtle flower corsage pinned on his vest.
