What comes to mind when you hear the word tradition? Boring? Uncreative? Obligatory? It doesn’t have to be any of that. When planning a wedding, […]
Funmi and Dolapo were such a joy to work with. They, especially the bride, wanted to see the reception room before guests came in, so of course, I had to arrange that for them! I loved working with them.
How We Met
We met five years ago through a former mutual friend who figured we were going to be right for each other. We started chatting and skyping because he lived in Florida at that time while I lived in Lagos and didn’t actually meet face to face till 4 months later. He surprised me and showed up at my front door on Boxing Day in 2012. I had no idea he was flying in that evening. Best surprise ever!
Dolapo proposed twice because my dramatics and love of sleep totally ruined all the plans he had for the proposal. (Nu Bride: LOL!)
He apparently had made some grand plans to propose the night before he had to travel for work, but I didn’t know and I ended up ruining his plans and made him ask me in my house clothes at almost midnight on the street.
However a month later, we took a trip to Paris and on our last day, I had gone shopping and didn’t suspect anything when he declined going with me and even asked that I leave my ring behind. I came back to a room filled with flowers and breakfast and my man on one knee asking me to marry him again. So yes I got two proposals which means he must have really been sure. LOL! (Nu Bride: Brilliant! I am glad he got two ‘yes’s!)
The inspiration for the wedding was spring romance. I love romance, I love spring and the burst of colors that comes with it.
I had a bespoke wedding dress made, in soft peach with lots of tulle and exquisite beadwork by brides and babies. I loved my ball gown and felt so very romantic in it.
We had Bigg Ayo was our photographer for the day, he really got us and captured beautiful shots of us that we were not even aware of, as well as Roger from Diamond Films was such a gem.
I came across our planner, Alegrar Events on wedding blog, Aisle Perfect, checked out their instagram page and contacted Cynthia. Working with Cynthia was the best choice. She was hands on from day one, helped chase up vendors and the most amazing part was when we had a décor crisis two hours before the event was meant to start, she handled it perfectly. Life saver! I would say wedding planning is 100% easier once you have a trusted planner and coordinator. That can make or break your big day.
We had a heartfelt christian ceremony officiated by one of my pastors who we really looked up to, Pastor Tony Rapu. He flew in all the way from Nigeria to officiate our wedding.
There were so many wonderful highlights from the wedding, but walking down the aisle to my fave Jason Mraz song; I won’t give up, which summarises our entire relationship and 5 year journey to that moment.
During the reception, my ‘always full of surprises husband’, invited famous Nigerian musician; Wande Coal to perform (he flew in all the way from Nigeria) and we all partied SO hard.
It was certainly a good surprise and he did such a good job of hiding it from me (I always know everything! lol) It was awesome seeing all our friends and family celebrate with us
The funniest moment? Seeing Funmi’s face when Wande Coal appeared was brilliant
Nothing is too insignificant to pray about so, if you are religious, please pray about everything.
Also invest in a very good planner. You can’t do it all by yourself.
Learn to pick your battles, eventually not everything will be worth it.
Lastly, you are a team, your partner has as much say in the wedding as you do, so listen and give into their requests also
