If you haven’t already noticed, I have a thing for shoes. Stylish chic shoes of course.
During my own wedding planning I remember being bored by what was offered to me as bridal wedding shoe options. They all kind of looked the same and to me, they had no style, were definitely unsexy and to me had no personality. Also – why oh why were they all ivory?
Thankfully we’ve moved on a little and luxury designers are quickly introducing fashionable wedding collections. Flying the flag for the modern stylish bride, the brilliant Manchester based designer Charlotte Mills Bridal.
Charlotte Mills Bridal launched in 2014 to offer fashion conscious brides, sassy, stylish, colourful, yet affordable designer wedding shoe options, for ladies, like me who want their feet to look pretty too! Hallelujah.
Not only has Charlotte introduced a brand to the market to appeal to the modern lady, she has also fused old with new brilliantly by acknowledging tradition. Charlotte cleverly weaves the well-known wedding tradition and poem;
Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue a silver sixpence in her shoe…
into her brand beautifully. The poem is etched into the soles of each of her designs. But, for me, the real icing on the cake, is that each shoe is delicately hand finished and embedded with a silver sixpence in the left shoe. Wishing the beholder luck and prosperity.
Charlotte Mills Bridal is absolutely sweeping the wedding industry off of their feet with her beautiful, well-crafted fashionable footwear and her innovate designs, blending modern with tradition. Charlotte is just as delightful as her shoes, which can easily be worn post wedding too!

What was your journey to Charlotte Mills Bridal?
For as long as I can remember I have always wanted to design shoes. I attended Cordwainers at London College of Fashion where I gained my BA in footwear design, I knew I wanted to create my own brand after designing a bridal footwear range for my final year show.
This is where the dream began.
After university I worked as a footwear design manager for a variety of UK brands until I felt the time was right to launch the Charlotte Mills brand in April 2014
What inspires your designs?
Love hearts provide the inspiration for collection each style incorporating them in a unique and individual way.
I love art deco and art nouveau, so studied heart shapes and also the lines used in the architecture of these era’s and gave them a modern twist to create the designs.
I have always had a passion for shoes. I couldn’t imagine designing anything else.
It is amazing to be able to design something which someone will love and want to wear on their wedding day to show a little bit of their personality. I find this really inspiring.
Thank you for designing modern alternatives for fashion conscious brides who still salute tradition. Why was this important to you?
I wanted to create something different to what is already on the market.
Brides should fall in love with their wedding shoes and not just settle.
When designing the range, creating styles which are fashion forward is important.
I want brides to be able to wear their shoes again after their wedding day.
Why add colour to your wedding day shoes?
I love the idea of adding a bit of fun and contrast to your wedding day. The coloured shoes really make ladies stand out from the crowd and are a unique statement.
Some brides pick their favourite colour, or opt for a colour to fit with the theme or to match their lip colour this makes for a really striking look.
We also have two shades of blue which brides can use as their ‘something blue’
Where did the silver sixpence in her shoe design idea come about?
Just before my own wedding, my best friends mum gave me a little box with a sixpence inside and a note with the old phrase. Before then, I had no idea the rhyme ended with ‘and a silver sixpence in her shoe.’
When I started designing the collection I knew I had to get the sixpence in there somehow.
Brides utterly love this concept and its completely unique to our brand.
When should brides be thinking about buying their wedding shoes?
Once you have decided on your dress/theme, then you can select your shoes.
It’s important to get your shoes before your fittings, so the correct alterations can be made for the length of your wedding outfit.
However, we have had a few brides who have started with the shoe before they had even decided on a dress – girls after my own heart!! (Nu Bride: Mine too!)
Who is your favourite shoe designer?
I am a little obsessed with Sophia Webster shoes. So much fun and colour.
I believe in dressing from the feet up. (Nu Bride: Quite right Charlotte – quite right. Rubbish shoes ruin an entire outfit. lol!)
Favourite thing to do to re-energise?
I love to cook and bake when I get time. I am a real home-bird at heart. That and going for long country walks with my two dogs Meg and Coco.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
I really like to travel to the USA, my favourite place is Miami. It’s always so much fun and great for people watching. The shops are fab, the food so good, it’s a real fusion with influences from all over the US, Mexico and South America. So much to see and do and only a short drive to the beautiful Florida keys.
