Gorgeous Nu Bride Readers!

I am absolutely thrilled to have the genius that is Errol Douglas MBE and team on Nu Bride. I was recently contacted by the team and today I am lucky enough to share some bridal hair tips from the Errol Douglas Salon. The Errol Douglas Salon is unique in that it caters for Afro, European and International hair types and is known for having one of the strongest bridal teams on board!

Anyone who takes pride with their hair knows that getting your hair right and finding a hairdresser that you can trust and depend on is a hard feat. Especially for those of us that experience the trials and tribulations of unpredictable and badly behaved afro hair. (You would not believe the amount of times I just want to cut mine all off! lol!) With this in mind, finding the right hairdresser for your wedding day is incredibly important for some brides and is a task in itself. My humble advice; take your time! Spend time researching so that you choose the right hairdresser, don’t get seduced by tempting ‘sign up now to get this special discounted price’ type offers at wedding fairs, go at your own pace. Take advantage of any bridal consultations and seek references or recommendations from other brides.

Read on to find out more about Errol Douglas Salon and for some top tips and pure delights to help you with your journey to perfect bridal hair.

The renowned Errol Douglas salon, established in 1998, boasts an A-list clientele and award-winning team that excel both technically and artistically at bridal hair. It is a unique situation with teams specialising in European and Afro hair working side by side, setting trends, influencing each other and offering the very best possible service. The team is experienced at all types of weddings from a bride visiting the salon on her own on the day of her wedding, through to travelling internationally to attend wedding celebrations that have lasted several days.

The salon offers a bridal consultation service. What does this involve?

“It has two stages, the consultation followed by a hair trial. During the initial consultation, the colour, cut and condition of the hair will be reviewed and the bride will be advised the best way of getting her hair in tip-top condition before her big day. It’s always best if the consultation takes place some months before the wedding as various treatments may need to be considered long before the big day.”

What happens during the second stage of the consultation?

“The second stage is the hair trial. This is when we need photographs of the dress and any moodboards that will help us understand the mood and feel of the day. We will then trial between 2 and 4 different looks that will be photographed so that the bride can consider each look before choosing the final style for her wedding.”

What are the latest trends and inspirations for Black bridal hair?

“Bridal hair has always tended to be more classic and safe, however this has changed slightly over the last few years with brides willing to try something different and not necessarily opting for a classic hair-up. Women are very confident now about choosing a hairstyle for their wedding which suits them rather than having tradition and trends imposed on them. The current trend for natural hair is filtering through to bridal hair creating beautiful looks which are softer and less structured.”

What other factors need to be taken into account for bridal hair?

“The dress, venue, overall theme of the wedding and flowers should be considered”.

What are your top three tips for bridal hair?

  1. Don’t feel pressured to wear your hair up – it doesn’t suit every bride. Choose a style which suits you and will look great in photographs as you will need to look at the hairstyle for yes to come.
  2. Never wear your hair so that it can fall into your face – it interferes with your makeup and can be a distraction in photographs.
  3. Whilst great hair is vital for your big day, remember that your hair should complement your dress and your overall look, rather than making a statement.
