To Leap or Not To Leap – Leap Year Proposals

An interesting debate arose on my facebook page recently that I thought would make a nice little and amusing blog post.

With a leap year heading our way this year I asked:

“If a lady decides to take the plunge and propose to her man, is she expected to buy her own engagement ring???”

Does it empower women, can it just be part of the norm –  are people reading to much into it? does it take away a man’s masculinity…

Some of the comments ranged from:

“No, No, No!!!! No discussion necessary….”

“Usually (here – in the USA) if this is the case she will only get a wedding band and both will wear promise rings :)”

“Just NO!!!!”

The next one made me laugh out loud – had to edit it slightly so it is family friendly 😉

In an Australian accent: ” It’s just not cricket! Why don’t you cut his b**ls off and tell him to stay sober for the rest if his life!!!!! Ya just don’t do that! I’d say no out of principle.” Joe Taylor

“I never had a proposal. We just decided while talking how we would want to get married and then when we could afford to. He still bought my ring though. We went together to choose it.”

” I think that if she has proposed then yes she would be expected too, but hopefully he would man up and do the deed!”

If I’d decided to propose, then I would have purchased my own ring. That said, I would never have considered proposing in the first place! Also, some men delay the proposal because they cannot afford to get the ring they like. If the woman proposes and expects him to buy her ring, then it’s an added pressure, no?!

But the question is why wouldn’t you have considered it in the first place? ;o)
