Phil and I were skiing in Italy, a family tradition for him and the first time for myself!
We took a different slope down the and agreed to meet his parents down the mountain. We stopped off behind a café on the slope to get closer to the edge to take a scenic photo. While standing knee-deep in snow trying to get the perfect pano, I turn around and Phil is down on one knee with a black box in hand and a perfect emerald cut halo engagement ring sitting in the centre.
Meanwhile all this excitement had me so overwhelmed, I lose my footing and fall face forward into the snow… So at this point we’re now waist deep in snow (thank goodness for that snow suit) when Phil tells me he loves me and asked me to marry him. I responded “can I have a think about this?” Only joking, of course, I said yes! (Nu Bride: You little devil, you. Perfection!)
Our wedding at first didn’t really have a “theme” and before we knew it, we realised in all reality, it did. Being that we have been in long distance relationship for 2 years, we wanted to reflect that in our wedding. Our invites were a romantic vintage map, our seating chart was themed “where in the world am I sitting” . Our table numbers were pictures of us in cities that Phil and I had traveled together.
It couldn’t have been anymore fitting and us.
We chose Leah Henson as our photographer to capture our special day and I would wholeheartedly recommend her, she was amazing!
My amazing wedding planners and right hand(s) were my In-Laws & owners of Areles Bridal in Darwen. My mother and sister-in-law made my wedding day so amazingly special and beautiful. Planning a wedding can be stressful, especially from another country 5000 miles away. I couldn’t have done it without them.
My dress wasn’t hard to find. I really wasn’t looking for it when I found it. It kinda found me.
My dress was a white sweetheart fitted mermaid gown with beading and lace all over the dress. The bottom had a very elegant, glamorous ruffled train which reminded me of traditional spanish salsa dancers with a cathedral veil with a blusher.
I love dressing up and this dress was nothing short of glam. I never imagined I could feel as beautiful as I did on my wedding day.
Phil’s Italian wedding suit was something he planned for months!
He had it custom-made so it could be fitted perfectly to his body and he kept it a surprise from me until I saw him waiting near the alter. (Nu Bride: How brilliant!) His navy suit was gorgeous with a crisp clean white button up that had our initials JP on the left cuff and PP on his right. He wore his grandfather’s gold pocket watch and cognac coloured wing tip oxfords I got him for Christmas. He looked so dapper, and handsome.
Our wedding ceremony was held in the langtree suite which was perfect for our 50 guests, keeping it spacious but still very intimate.
Perfectly lit up with outdoor sunlight, twinkle lights near the floor to ceiling windows and candles lining the aisle. I didn’t want to compete with the beauty of the room so we chose two pillars with large vases full of branches and hydrangeas. It was very whimsical and romantic
My favourite part was being able to vocalise to my husband how much he means to me in ways I don’t get to tell him every day. We wrote our own vows, and Im so happy we did.
The funniest moment was when my husband in vows said “I promise to wipe away your tears when you are sad” and I was in the middle of wiping away tears (of joy) with my handkerchief and all of our guests started laughing as I waved it around in the air. It brightened up the mood after some waterworks.
Flowers are so beautiful but I wanted very minimal decor for our reception decor, so we decided on larger statement centerpieces that dress up the room.
Just elegant. Fresh hydrangeas with branches lined in soft gold and ivory leaves in large vases wrapped in burlap with tea light candles to enhance. Our sweetheart table had beautiful blush roses, baby’s breath and hydrangeas. We had beer pong tables because who doesn’t love beer pong? Thought I’d let a bit of my American side shine through haha.
We were torn on two different songs so we decided to go with neither. We chose Etta James “At Last” since it symbolised when we finally got it right after being friends for 6 years. (Nu Bride: Beautifully perfect choice!) We were nervous weeks before about stepping on each other’s feet but the first dance was beautiful. We just swayed so organically. And he even managed to dip me on the final note! (Nu Bride: Smooth!)
Challenges and Triumphs
Planning a wedding overseas is a challenge.
Time difference, lack of communication was trivial. But with our support team, we pulled everything through and it was magical.
Phil and I culturally saw things a little differently for our wedding, so yes compromises were made but that’s the beginning of marriage. Just always remember, the day of is going to be amazing and the little stressors are minimal and don’t fight lol
One Tip for Other Couples
I’m sure if you’ve heard this once, you’ve heard it a million times…
Your wedding day will go so fast. Enjoy every moment of it! And take a break from the noise and guests and spend a moment with your partner to reflect and let it soak in for a few minutes. You’re MARRIED!
Perfect advice Javedys and Phil! Thank you so much for sharing your magical day with us!
