I refuse to succumb to the idea that summer is swiftly exiting the UK. So with defiance, today I’m going to introduce you to some Ultrasun magic and dispel some myths about immunity to skin cancer.
I have to be honest, I am a little bit relaxed with applying sun cream until I recently discovered Ultrasun and want to give a standing ovation for the absolutely brilliant Ultrasun Spots Gel that doesn’t take a decade to apply and does not leave hideous white streaks all over my body after application! I’ve never been so excited about a sun care product. Not cheap – but definitely a superior product.
More importantly I also wanted to highlight some pretty powerful findings which will blow pre-conceived ideas about sun protection for some skin tones out of the water and highlight the very real implications of not protecting your body on honeymoon, holiday, your outdoor ceremony, on home turf, anywhere.
I’ve always been a little ‘fluid’ when applying sun cream, especially on home turf. Usually laziness and being put off by products that leave white streaks over my body and a little ignorant too, thinking about my Caribbean routes…well they don’t really need sun cream do they, they are conditioned and used to the sun and surely it’s in my genes, plus I have dark skin, so I don’t need it right?
Leading Swiss sun care experts Ultrasun, is committed to raising awareness of the need for sun protection for all skin tones, including dispelling the common misconception that darker skin tones do not require sun protection.
Skin cancer is on the rise, and is the most common form of cancer in the UK. Around 13,300 cases of malignant melanoma were diagnosed in the UK in 2011, that’s 37 people every day. Over the last thirty years, rates of malignant melanoma in the UK have risen faster than any of the current top ten cancers.
Although skin cancer is rare in those with darker and black skin, the mortality rate is higher. Due to a lack of awareness of the risks, it is often diagnosed at a later stage making it harder to treat.
Well that made be stop and think instantly.
I grabbed UK Managing Director of Ultra Sun Abi Cleeve to give me the low down, dispel some myths and share tips on making sure you have the right SPF for your skin type and tone.
Ultra Sun Experience
All Ultrasun products are a simple once-a-day application thanks to the patented liposome technology used in the range that ensures rapid absorption and no greasy residue. Thanks to customer feedback this year we also launched the Sports Gel in a higher SPF of 30.
Ultrasun offers a simple once-a-day experience and a range designed to meet specific needs of varied lifestyles: Family, Sport Gel, Extreme, Face, Glimmer & Extra Care. Ultrasun is the “no sweat” approach to sun care – literally, products don’t rub off with sweat, towel drying, swimming or showering and have a 2 year shelf life on opening.
Which SPF is right for your skin type and tone?
High protection isn’t a licence to bake.
Using high sun protection factors can encourage holidaymakers to increase their time in the sun, ironically risking over exposure and thus burning anyway.
The level of protection used should focus on skin type and time recommended in the sun with it, take a look here: http://www.ultrasun.com/en/sun-account (Nu Bride: sadly this SPF indicator doesn’t go past olive skin types – but hopefully this will be updated soon and for now may give you a bit more guidance )
You’ll still get a tan with a high protection sun cream, it’ll be slower with less risk and guess what? – it’ll last longer!
Don’t forget UVA protection
Always look for UVA protection as well as UVB (SPF). UVA rays penetrate so deeply into the skin doing cell level damage. Try to avoid fragrance, preservatives and oils as these can upset sensitive skins especially when you are exposing to UV rays and your skin has enough to cope with. Remember it may be a holiday, honeymoon or celebration for you, but it is your skin’s most traumatic time!
Everyone needs to stay safe in the sun. Regardless of natural skin colour, no one is immune from sun damage, and for darker skin tones to be both less susceptible yet see higher (often preventable) mortality rates illustrates the need to raise awareness. We have sun protection products for all skin types that deliver high, broad spectrum protection with just one application, leaving none of the chalky residue those with darker skin tones are understandably keen to avoid
When should you apply sun protection in your beauty regime
Always apply sun protection first, so that the UVA and UVB filters bond uninhibited. I always say “cleanse, tone, ultrasun”. Our Face formulas are so light and easily absorbed that they’ve become very popular as a year round under make up primer too.
