Happy New Year beautiful readers!
Can you believe it. It was just one year ago today that I conjured up the idea for Nu Bride. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!
A little spot of reflection….
When I first put finger to laptop on the 3rd January 2011 – and wrote my first ever Nu Bride blog post (read it here if you like!) I had no idea what Nu Bride would bring or where it would go, or more importantly whether anyone would be remotely interested in reading my posts! lol!
I talked about feeling excluded as a black bride-to-be, by not seeing models who look remotely like me in many wedding magazines. (Come to think of it do the models ever look like any of us!? – That’s an issue with advertising as a whole and a whole other topic! But you get the gist. ;o)) Reading articles that I could not relate to and becoming just a little bit disheartened. I talked about how surprised I was that in such a multicultural country and industry, there was such a huge void in the representation for black brides in the UK wedding industry.
I wanted Nu bride to be a wedding blog that documented my own wedding planning journey, whilst also sharing fun, tips and inspiration for other brides-to-be with a special little emphasis on black brides-to-be. Hoping in some tiny way to reduce the big gaping hole in the mainstream wedding industry. I also wanted Nu Bride to be for any bride that wanted something a little bit different and to offer just a pinch more choice.
I try to use language that is universal on Nu Bride, to post features that readers can relate to and laugh or smile at – Of course the wedding planning journey is not all about your ethnicity. For me it was about finding something that I could identify with on a number of levels, finding something inclusive that spoke to me on my wedding planning journey and finding variety. It’s always in the back of my mind to include and not exclude when writing a post, so that at some point somewhere, you can relate to something, or as equally important; find a service or idea you have not already seen in a magazine or wedding show.
I still have a long way to go, but developing Nu Bride has been such a special journey. I’ve enjoyed sharing my stories with you and being sent copious amounts of emails from brides-to-be asking for advice and blog topics, as well as connecting with some of THE most talented and generous suppliers in the industry. Inspired!
Nu Bride has brought many new and exciting opportunities that were unimaginable when I first started blogging; My proudest is probably being approached to write for a couple of magazines.
However, THE most rewarding part of starting Nu Bride is the positive and supportive response I have got and continue to get from my readers. I cannot thank you enough for finding what I have to say interesting. Thank you to all those who have contributed in some way and a special thank you to all the brides in 2011 for sharing your weddings on Nu Bride. You are the reason I write and am inspired to write. So, for as long as you continue to find Nu Bride interesting, I will continue to write! ;o)
